About this document
This wiki page is an addition to the LOWI for pilots tutorial. The tutorial explains the logic and the procedures to land in Innsbruck, Austria. This checklist is intended to help when approaching, just quoting the necessary steps for the most popular approaches with IFR flight rule.
1. On Cruise
- Get the charts ready from [here]
- See the [STAR chart] and see your flight plan, where you come in: via RTT NDB or KTI NDB.
- Get Innsbruck ATIS if available, or Innsbruck METAR for local QNH.
- Calculate your TOD point to reach RTT or KTI at the desired level (RTT: 9500ft; KTI: 13.000ft, both local QNH)
2. Approach
2.1 LOC DME East approach
- Have the [LOC DME East Approach chart] visible at all times
- Tune VOR receiver 1 to OEV 111.10
- Set OBS 1 to follow to 254°
- Tune NDB receiver 2 to AB NDB (313) for go-around, step 1
- Tune NDB receiver 1 to RTT NDB (303) for go-around, step 2
- Descend to reach RTT NDB at 9.500ft (local QNH) or at level told by ATC.
- Reduce speed 250kt or less
- If necessary, enter holding: Right turn, 226° inbound radial, 1 minute
- When cleared LOC DME East approach, leave RTT at 210°, ready to intercept 254° radial OEV 111.10
- Prepare aircraft to reach speed below 165kt by AB NDB (for heavy aircraft, this might be as early as now!)
- Intercept 254° radial towards OEV 111.10
- Intercept glideslope and monitor descent following the table at the bottom of the chart
- Have the [Innsbruck Visual Approach Chart] visible until touchdown
- Approaching AB NDB, verify altitude about 4500ft, speed 165kt or below, runway in sight and landing clearance, if not: go around (see below)
- Switch off autopilot now
- Flaps down, gear down, landing speed
- steer aircraft manually left over Innsbruck to meet extended centerline, manually following the OEV glideslope.
- land and brake for a short landing, enabling you to leave via A (makes life for controllers easier).
Go Around LOC DME East
- climb on LLZ OEV (111.10, course 254°) with max rate of climb and speed below 165kt
- At 1nm DME OEV, left turn to 060° to AB NDB (it's in NDB receiver 2!)
- Rejoin outbound OEV radial (074°) and continue climb with max gradient
- At 14nm DME OEV, turn to RTT NDB (it's in NDB receiver 1!) and enter holding at 9500ft
